Arcee kept looking out of the window at the cityscape, hands tense on the sill.

Crystal City was still unfamiliar. It wasn’t her home. It wasn’t what she used to share with Greenlight and Gauge before everything had gone south, before they had made the mistake of taking refuge on Heretech’s ship. Crystal City didn’t look right; it didn’t look like home.

“Arcee!”

She jumped at Greenlight’s voice.

“Come on. Gauge wants to show you how her cooking has been coming along.” A gentle hand rested on her arm, affectionately urging her to leave the window and its foreign view behind. “She didn’t even burn anything this time.”

Arcee shook her head to clear the fog of worry, letting Greenlight tug her wandering thoughts back into the here and now. Greenlight and Gauge were safe; she was safe, for now at least.

“What did she make?” She allowed herself to be led away to the kitchen, whence wafted the smells of amateur fuel refinement. Gauge was definitely improving.

“I haven’t figured it out quite yet.” Greenlight shrugged. “Something tasty.”

Entering the kitchen and seeing Gauge covered in soot but grinning proudly, Arcee realized she had been wrong; this was home.
