Fic under the cut.
Orion hadn’t really been sure what he was expecting when he came to the arena. He knew that Megatron had been doing well in the gladiatorial games, but his busy schedule at the archive hadn’t allowed them the time to actually watch his friend fight. Even if Orion didn’t understand the appeal. He’d been lucky enough to get tickets to sit relatively close to the ring. The tickets were cheap because no one wanted to be in the “splash zone” but he wanted to be able to better see Megatron on the field. The cheap seats suited Orion just fine.
His friend would be in the first match of the day. While the chances of Megatron being seriously hurt were low, given his skill and the fact this wasn’t a death match, that didn’t stop Orion from thinking that perhaps… if he had to, he could leap down from the wall and intervene. That would violate so many regulations, but…. Well, no, Orion hoped it wouldn’t come to that, as he leaned his elbows against the ring’s high wall, waiting for the combatants to make their appearance. Weapons were supposed to be blunted in these sorts of matches after all, right?
Announcements of combatant names echoed overhead. The sandy floor of the arena opened and two platforms with cage-like walls rose out of the dust, a broad, heavy form planted solidly on each. Orion recognized one immediately before the platforms had even locked into place, level with the floor.
A horn blared and the cages retracted at once into the sand.
The fighters charged towards each other, Megatron with a sword in his left hand and his opponent bearing an axe as tall as himself.
The crowd roared, Orion one of the loudest among them. He understood the appeal now.
